In 1981, PepsiCo became one of the first American companies to enter China when it signed a contract with the Chinese government to set up a bottling plant in Shenzhen. Thus began Pepsi’s investment in the country. PepsiCo has invested over US$1 billion in setting up 21 bottling plants and one concentrate plant in 20 cities all over China. The company directly employs more than 15,000 staff and creates 150,000 indirect job opportunities in China.

Agro-Technology: PepsiCo developed a US$20 million, comprehensive agro-technology program in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, which introduced state-of-the-art seed development techniques and farming practices. Potato yields more than double in 3 years, benefiting 1,100 farming families.

Fast-Food Partnerships: PepsiCo introduced the Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken fast-food chains to China in 1987. Today, the businesses belong to Yum! Restaurants International but remain major PepsiCo customers.
